Convincing sendmail to do this is simple enough... until it gives me the
dreaded:

We had the same problem running sendmail-5.6.1 on AIX 3.2.5. The
solution was to remove 'U' (use Unix-style From line) from the list of
flags in the mailer entry:
Muunet, P=/usr/bin/uux, F=DFMhu, S=19, R=29, M=10000000,
A=uux - -r -n -a$f -gC uunet!rmail ($u)
