Thanks to all you generous people who responded with posts, email, and
yes, even by phone!

The problem with my IDE drive in an older machine and FreeBSD turned
out to be very close to many of the suggestions:

1.  FreeBSD had no trouble reading my IDE drive and installed just
    fine as it went.

2.  My BIOS did not recognize drive type 47 (installed by the Conner
    utility accompanying the drive.  That utility relied on a
    DOS driver to interpret the drive for MS DOS.

3.  My PC Setup program turned out to have an *undocumented* switch
    allowing me to "customize" the drive.  My troubles were over
    once I discovered that switch.  (setup /c  for what its worth).

When I re-setup my BIOS to the specifics of the drive, using the 
setup switch above, FreeBSD booted just fine.
