You only have to add it to /etc/master.passwd, then type (as root!),
pwd_mkdb.  If it's not on your PATH, it's in /sbin or somewhere like
that.  This will generate a local hashed database of passwords, and
create nice 'compatibility' versions of the old /etc/passwd format.
