Actually, I did get this solved.  Wolfgang Stanglmeier of PCI NCR SCSI
driver fame realized what I had been doing.  I had been building my kernel
and naming it something other than /386bsd.  I booted from this different
name, but the programs that I was having trouble with were looking in the
old kernel for their symbol tables.  Now that I understand what is going on,
everything works just fine.  Thank you for your response.  One other
suggestion I got mentioned the math emulator as a source of potential
problems.  This is probably something to keep in mind as well, but my
problem was the nut behind the wheel.
