Addendum:
I decided it might be a good idea to add something to my /etc/rc like
>if [ -r /single ]

>echo "will stay in single user mode"
>exit 0
>fi
Unfortunately, this makes init's forked incarnation exit 0 so init puts a
getty/login on /dev/console. Same thing happend after "exit 1" and terminating
the single user shell.

This proved to be fun since /etc/nologins still existed *and* al the uid 0's
didn't have a password. login then decided that logging in as root was not
a root login.

Workaround: Give your root account a password.
