I grabbed the FreeBSD ports version of expect and compiled it on my machine.
It appears to work save for an annoying message that appears whenever a
process is spawned:

   frood.nsg.bc.ca: expect
   expect1.1> spawn cat -u
   spawn cat -u
stty: stdout appears redirected, but stdin is the control descriptor: Undefined error: 0
   9185

I have fiddled with the config files and hunted through the source and I cannot
figure out how to get rid of this problem. Anyone experienced this or have
a suggested solution.
