It is called cognitive dissonance. People spent a lot of time and effort
mastering different variants of Unix, accumulating -in their minds, 
at least- a certain amount of prestige in the Unix hacker community. Now
here comes a group of young impertinant hackers developing a new Unix-like
system that far surpasses their beloved *BSD* in popularity. They are now
confused and filled with doubt. They circle the wagons and attack the
source of the dissonance.
