You have to patch slattach to do it's work with 57600Bd. And you have to patch tty.c to allow working with a line hung up by loss of carrier. When you are changing slattach, you might also open the file descriptors 0 and 1 for chat in slattach, so you won't need the ugly redirects anymore.
