Subject: no ! in UUCP From line?

I am using FreeBSD 1.1 and sendmail v8.6.8. Prelims out of the way, here's
the problem.

All of my mail transfer is currently being handled by UUCP. However I want
my From: line to contain @ style addressing. Ideally I want my from: line
to apear thustly:

From: root@cioeserv.cioe.com (System Adminstrator)

Convincing sendmail to do this is simple enough... until it gives me the
dreaded:

Aug 4, 1994 sendmail [865]: RAA00863: SYSERR(root): No ! in UUCP From
address! (root@cioeserv.cioe.com given)

This message is repeated three times. The message is sent, but an
error message is also sent to me.

If I use bang addressing all is well except then the return path
is more complex and sometimes incorrect.

The Ideal World

I'd use domain addressing and sendmail wouldn't give me errors. Does
anyone have ideas on this? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks
muchly.
