I don't know about FreeBSD, but I've been doing this with NetBSD for
months:

[michaelv@MindBender]~> dir /netbsd
-rw-rw-r--  1 root  kmem  863485 Aug  2 02:42 /netbsd

It just depends on how sophisticated your boot loader code is.
