The NCR 53c810 works well under FreeBSD, I know Linux support is being worked
on by Drew Eckhardt, but I don't know about it's current state.

(The FreeBSD driver is available from "FTP.Uni-Koeln.DE:packages/FreeBSD".
It didn't make it into FreeBSD-1.1.5, but installs within a few minutes and
there a boot floppy image and generic kernels are available in this directory
if you don't want to build your own kernel. Reports from satisfied customers
are available on request. :)

I'd rather use the NCR than the BT964, since it is a low cost solution that
offers best performance possible !
(Bonnie reports 30% cpu at 3MB/s transferred through the file system on
a 486/66 (using a cheap 1GB drive). This corresponds to some 25 to 30MB/s
at 100% cpu load on a fast Pentium system (ie. > 90MHz), or only a few
percent in real world situations).

Just make sure your motherboard has SMDS ROMS, or you won't be able to boot
from SCSI disks ...
