It's even simpler: I use the "connect" option to pppd to call "chat" with
a script to dial and log into the server. No manual action required...

Another nice thing: when IPCP is set up, an optional script is executed
(as well as when the connection is down again). I use these to switch my
/etc/resolv.conf between an "online" and "offline" version.
