Do you have a /dev/com1?   Perhaps you want to make a link between tty01
and com1?  or, change the Xconfig to use tty01.

As far as "twiddling" the monitor settings.  You should be able to find
a pile of settings included with the XFree86 Distribution.  There is
also a document (the name is included at the end of the XConfig man
page) that will take you through all the technicalities of messing with
resolutions.
