You don't an et4000 card to start the server what is helpful is a dumb
terminal connected to the system from where you can start the server
with the 8514 driver  and debug it with gdb.

There is code which implements an 8514 driver for AIX. I think is 
worth looking into...

Also in the linux group there is the beginnings for an ATI driver
