Why argue about who can/should use XFree86 3.0?  The position from the
XFree86 group is that is it not supported by us in the way a normal
release would be, and it is not as complete as we would like a normal
release to be.  If you do use it and find bugs, let us (and the X
Consortium) know about them.  You can report bugs to the XFree86 group
by sending them to XFree86@XFree86.org.

Try turning off NumLock before starting the server the first time.
That is the cause of the bug.  The reason it suddenly shows up with
1.1.5.1 is that syscons is now the default console driver, and it now
has NumLock on by default at boot time.  The bug leading to the SIGSEGV
is *NOT* in syscons or FreeBSD though.  It is in the X server, and will
be fixed in XFree86 3.1.
