You have many solutions :

1. upgrade to 1.1.5.1, I think the problem is fixed (I don't really know, I
   use elvis),
2. keep on using elvis which is smaller,
3. take the nvi-1.14 from ftp://ftp.cs.berkeley.edu/ucb/4bsd and recompile.
