: 1.) use kermit to call and establish connection which starts ppp on their end.
: 2.) do a: pppd /dev/ttyd00 57600, it immediately resets the modem and dies.

: Make sure that you do a 'Ctrl-\' 'C' back to your kermit, then 'Ctrl-Z'
: to suspend kermit - don't exit kermit cuz it will kick yer modem off-line.

I recently had this problem myself.  The solution for me was to
force my modem to ignore DTR and CD.
