Hmm.  After reinstalling another couple of times (I would never have
tried so many times if this were on floppies!), it looks like it is
a problem in the srcdist extracting.  If I just do a bindist, things
work fine.  Does one of the srcdist files overwrite something
important?

Now to get X running...
(I guess I'll do that tomorrow, since I have to get up for work in
about 5 hours. :-(  )
