I hate to answer my own post, but I solved the problem!  I rebooted with
the fixit disk, mounted /wd0a, and looked in the /dev directory under
tty*.  Somehow tty had gotten corrupted, and didn't have the character bit
set, nor the right major/minor device numbers. I'm sure this is a 
"newbie" problem, but I thought it might help someone in the same 
position.  Thanks for all the help from this group and the FreeBSD Core team.
