You are right; I made the floppies with mtools under Linux.  What I did
was reformat just the optional DOS floppy, and read my floppies with mcopy.
It worked!

Sorry about that, I was using 1.1.5R but I couldn't remember the device
name!  Anyhow, I tried switching to my Oak card and it works fine.  The
problem is, XFree86 doesn't support my Oak card, only the Trident.  I am so
new to this OS that I'm only vaguely aware that there are more than one
console driver, so I think I'll try to recompile the kernel with a 
different driver; might this help?  (BTW, I've tried all of the *BSD's and
also Minix with my Trident card and all of them lose the cursor, and I
tried it with two different motherboards).
