Now, I realize the core team must have been in a terrible rush to get
everything done before the deadline, but somebody must have been asleep
at the switch for this to have happened.

The FreeBSD 1.1.5 install script on the filesyst floppy allows you to choose
what hard disk you want to install the system on, and in fact you can run
FreeBSD 1.1.5 from something besides your primary drive without too much
trouble. Last night, I tried to install it on my second IDE drive (wd1) and I
discovered a really serious problem: you can't do it.

Why?

Because although you can tell the install script that you'd like to install
FreeBSD on wd1 rather than wd0, there are NO DEVICE NODES FOR WD1 IN /dev
ON THE FILESYST FLOPPY!!!!!!!! (There aren't any entries for wd1 in the
'filelist' file either, which means the install script will be unable to
create /dev/wd1* on the hard disk, which will further bung up the works.)

You can specify wd0, sd0 or sd1 and it will work, but with wd1, the script
will tell you "Can't read /dev/wd1d" (or some such thing) because there
is no /dev/wd1d. This is a damn shame, because there's no reason in the
world why you can't install to wd1. Or wd2 for that matter. You can have
more than 2 IDE drives in one computer, you know.

I've managed to patch together a revised filesyst floppy that properly
supports installing FreeBSD on the second IDE disk. If the official 1.1.5
floppies aren't updated before too long, I'll upload it to the incoming
directory on freebsd.cdrom.com.

For the record, I spotted this little misfeature in the ALPHA version of
1.1.5. Unfortunately, that was yesterday afternoon. By the time I got the
chance to log in and post a bug report, 1.1.5-RELEASE was already out.

*sigh*
