I haven't gone into this fully, and I have no way of knowing if this has
been addressed before. There doesn't seem to be anything on ftp.cdrom.com
acknowledging this either.

The README for the packages sets says to unpack the packages by:

	cd /
	tar xvzf package-to-install.tgz

and that this will expand package-to-install into the correct
directories.

It quickly became clear (using a foreach :-( ) that this is not so: for
several (if not all) packages, the correct place to tar xvz is /usr/local.

When I've had a chance to clean up the mess, I'll have to walk slowly.
