Ugen,

Try adding the keyword "aui" without the quotes to the end of the ifconfig 
line in netstart for the 3c509.  I had the same problem with the 3c509
until adding "aui".  I happened to look at the code for the driver and
found that this also activates the twisted pair connector that I am using.
It seems to  work fine for me with an ifconfig of "ifconfig ep0 inet <
ip_address> aui" command for me.
