Hello all. I hate to be answering my own questions in the group, but I
couldn't wait for an answer. The problem was "no request for Password:
after Login: prompt, just Login incorrect". Here's what I ended up doing:

First, I booted off the fixit disk. I thought this might be an input
device problem of some kind, so I mounted wd0a on /mnt and ls'ed the tty
files under /mnt/dev. Sure enough the tty file was corrupted, no
"character" bit set. I rm'ed the bad tty file and created another one,
rebooted, everything was fine. I apologize to BSD gurus for boring you
with this post, but I thought it might help another "newbie" like me in
the same situation. Thanks to all in this group and the FreeBSD Core
team for their support. Cam Bevis cbevis@blkbox.com
