Sounds strange ... that doesn't seem to be the regular way of
installing freebsd ... Ever read some Install note ?!

Did you install a newer version of freebsd on a running system ?!

Or did you forget to use binary mode when ftp'ing those binary
files ...

Perhaps you tell more verbose what you did and say something
about release numbers ... Thanks.
