  I tried to do what you said, unfortunately it didn't help.
  I even reinstalled all the BSD from the scratch - and this time I didin't
play with .profile, but the result was the same! 
   init FATAL error : Console : interrupted system call
and this message is repeating endlessly, untill I restart comuter.

   Observation : 
      When installing the cpio diskette there was a warning - "skippink chunk
      of junk" or somrthing very similar.
      When  I was doing extract there was another warning/error
      " Bad CRC .....".
     I think, it is a last reservation, may be the CD ROM is bad?
