This RFD is an update of, and supercedes, the RFD for
comp.windows.wine.{announce,bugs,misc} in <2qodhv$47d@rodan.UU.NET>. It
will be posted to the wine-users@amscons.com mailing list as soon as it
appears in news.announce.newgroups.

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION:

comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine

CHARTER:

Announcements and discussion about Wine, a free MS-Windows API emulator
which will, once it is completed, enable Windows binaries to run under
X. Comp.emulators.ms-windows.wine will serve as a place for developers
to discuss Wine, and for minor announcements. Major announcements
should be crossposted to other appropriate groups, such as
comp.os.linux.announce and comp.windows.x.announce.

Bug reports should be sent to the developer's mailing list (yet to
be established); this mailing list may forward these articles to
the newsgroup.

RATIONALE:

The goal of the Wine project is to write a complete emulation of the
MS-Windows API which will enable to run programs written for Windows to
run under any 386 - based Unix running X. All the Windows API calls should
be translated into Xlib calls and thus run in full 32-bit mode.

There is a large developer and interest base, currenty served by a
mailling list with more than 700 subscribers, some of which are
local mail exploders or news-to-mail gateways themselves.

Discussion of news.groups has shown that the proposed group would
be more appropriate under comp.emulators.ms-windows, and that, at
present, it is not thought that more than one group will be needed.

DISCUSSION:

Discussion will continue in news.groups until the end of the 30 - day
period specified in <2qodhv$47d@rodan.UU.NET>, i.e. until the 9th
of June.

VOTE:

After the discussion period, a Call For Votes is expected if general
agreement has been reached.
