No, only that he shouldn't use yesterday's technology as today's
yardstick. I too have some old hardware I'm quite happy with, and I
use it with the knowledge that what's in the stores today is better in
any way I care compare them. But I'm not posting to the net using my
old hardware as a stencil for what can and can't be done.

I run SVR4.0.3, but when I talk about SVR4 I mean the latest version:
SVR4.2 or Solaris 2.[34]. What do you tell Linux users who say their
networking code os unreliable? I'd tell them to get the latest
version. What about people who use a six-month old Linux version as
the yardstick for Linux? I'm sure you'd be a lot more insulting than
you think I was in my refutal.

I was refuting the notion that the Adaptec 1540 can't boot from any
ID, and noted that the latest version should be used as the yardstick.
If you find that insulting, well, then that's really your problem, not
mine.

I have no idea whether the 1540 can boot from a CD; I never claimed it
can, simply because I haven't tried it or seen it done. I see no
reason to think it can't be done, so I reserve myself on that issue.
My best clue to thinking it's probably doable is that Amancio Hasty, a
hacker, not a net.speculator, says he's done it. But I have no direct
knowledge on this issue, and have more important things to do than
chatting on the phone with Adaptec's tech support.

Nor do I care whether 386BSD really boots from CD or not. I have no
interest in 386BSD. I have no financial or technical interest in it.
I just don't care; please keep me out of that discussion.
