I am running FreeBSD-1.1-BETA and just want to install a "GAMMA" kernel,
will I break anything in doing so? I wish to get rid of my console hangs,
but do not wish to upgrade all my binaries (I do not have enough space to
   recompile everything from source).

No, if you reinstall from the bindist you should be fine. Always remember
to back up your files in /etc, however!
