Actually, not true.

QIC-525 and QIC-1350 drives automatically handle variable block sizes
and several tape densities too. QIC-150 drives (as owned by the
original poster) will automatically handle several densities, though
only fixed block size.

From the documentation that came with my Connor CS525Q QIC-525 drive:

Drive Model	Drive Type	Reads Tapes	Writes Tapes
	-----------	----------	-----------	------------
	CS250Q QIC-150 QIC-150 QIC-150
					QIC-120 QIC-120
					QIC-24
	CS525Q QIC-525 QIC-525 QIC-525
					QIC-150 QIC-150
					QIC-120 QIC-120
					QIC-24
	CS1350Q QIC-1350	QIC-1350	QIC-1350
					QIC-1000	QIC-1000
					QIC-525 QIC-525
					QIC-150 QIC-150
					QIC-120 QIC-120
					QIC-24
