These are covered by a patent.  However, this patent was put in the
Public Domain (I use that term correctly) many years ago by Richie (I
think).  I've seen pictures of the document that has the issue date,
etc on it with the words "Donated to the Public Domain on <date>
<Signature>".

So that concept, at least, is in the public domain.

I'm sure that you could find examples of almost all of the other
"concepts" in previous systems.  Multics and TOPS-20 spring to mind as
good places to look.
