For the record, I got my ATI Ultra working with both 8514/A and VGA
(640x480 using the Mach8 server). I got the Mach8 server up with the
800x600 res as well as 1024x768 but the Xconfig file was in need of
serious tweaking to fix the screen display. (it was usable but not
pretty) I decided to stick with the Mach8 server for 640x480 and use
the 8514 server for 1024x768.

Thanks to those who help (here and in mail). The fundamental problem
(after deciphering the Xconfig file format and settings) was that
I did not use the "p" option on tar when I untarred the Xfree dist.
The Xfree README neglects to include this option in their listing of
the tar commands for untarring Xfree. The EXTRACT script (which I did
not discover/use until later) does have the "p" option.

Someone In Charge ought to fix the README file. Email me for exact
page numbers and filename if you plan to fix it. (I'm using the
FreeBSD 1.0 disc from Walnut Creek with Xfree 2.0. Versions since
then may well have fixed this error.)
