Thanks for the advice.  Last nite I removed xdm from the rc.local file
and used xinit to start X-windows.  The system is considerably more
stable.  (It looks like you are right -- conflicts between getty and
xdm).  Thanx.

One more question, and please excuse my ignorance. Assume I am running
xdm from rc.local.  As I understand it, I have to have a getty running
for the console.  If I have any other terminals, I would not run getty's
for them.  Is this correct?

(By the way, I'm running this on my home computer and I only have one
terminal -- the console).
