For quite a long time I use something like the following in .cshrc:

set prompt='[\!]'$cwd'>'
alias cd  'cd \!*;set prompt=\[\!\]$cwd\>'

giving a prompt (with history) like 

[53]/usr/src/sys/arch/i386/isa>
