I've seen reference to 32MB come up quite a bit,
but I haven't seen discussion of say 48MB or
64MB. Is this just because 32MB motherboards are
common, or is there a fundamental limitation of
   some sort to 32MB?

I think this is just financial. There is no reason why 64Mb wouldn't
work just as well (drool).
