Hi all.. I was having problems recompiling
/usr/src/sys/i386/boot/boot.c under FreeBSD 1.1 BETA. I wanted to set
up my BSD drive as my second hard drive, and wanted to modify the
bootblocks as suggested in the FAQ to do so. Before I changed
anything, the system I had was: generic 486DX/33, running with a
single 340 meg IDE drive as wd0.
I first tried just simply 'make wd wd0' from boot/, after
making the appropriate modifications in /etc/disktab and the Makefile
(ie, changes to the drive type). When I rebooted my computer, it came
up with the initial messages ("use hd(0,a)..." and "FreeBSD ..", etc
etc). However, at the prompt instead of trying to load wd(0,a)/386bsd
it kept trying f(0,a)/386bsd. When I tried to manually type in
wd(0,a), it said it couldn't find the device. Furthermore, when I
tried entering the floppy devicde instead, it failed as well, giving
me the same message. I had to reset the whole computer with a proper
kernel in the floppy drive in order to get results.
I went and fooled around with boot.c and finally I got
the thing to properly compile by commenting out the printf that
says "use hd(0,a)....". Now my system works great. Has anyone
else had any problems with 1.1 Beta like this? Is this a bug
in the software, or did I screw something up?
