From what I know Linux is using BSD derived networking code and they
built it into their OS somehow.

*BSD systems will be using BSD 4.4 (lite) networking code soon which
will introduce another gain in resource usage - me thinks.

The present network card drivers for *BSD are excellent wrt to
performance. They reach nearly the theoretical limit of the
underlying physical layer (Ethernet). (I'm speaking for FreeBSD-current
here).
