Yes, at least it is true for Linux. I guess you can do the same for *BSD.

It depends on whom you ask and what you do with it. I would suggest you
try all of them if you are not sure. If you ask me, I would say Linux.

For Lunux, you can ftp to sunsite.unc.edu. Under pub/Linux, there is
"distributions".
