Is the line you are using for your modem the same line as for the mouse?

To get bi-directional capabilities you need to have two different /dev entries,
on for call-out and one for call-in.

Because it's not configured correctly, and how to configure it not well
advertised. :-(

Sounds like either flow control or line speed problems.

Both modems?  Do you mean at both ends, and yes they must agree on the flow
control used.

Not necessarily.  Check out /etc/gettytab for what the modem is going to
use.

(To be frank, I'm not that experienced on setting up incoming modems, so
you'd be better off getting a book on it or finding someone more
experienced at it than me.)
