Why not make a special 386BSD kernel designed to just do backups?
Perhaps it could have a special single user mode just for backups.
I've read that programs like dump shouldn't be used on an active
filesystem anyway.  I'm not sure even tar should be used except in
single user mode either.

For people that have two computers, one solution would be to do a
network backup from the BSD box to the MS-DOS box with the tape drive.
