Hi, I am John Dyson, a core team member of FreeBSD. We have done
alot to make the FreeBSD OS much more stable. We do have some minor
limitations in some areas relative to other BSD variants or Linux, but
likewise they have some too. I am never into being religious or opinionated,
but I strongly suggest trying FreeBSD. The new release that is about
to come up addresses one of the major problems regarding stability,
the VM system. We have almost totally redone broken portions of the
VM system and support both swapping and paging, a very good LRU/Clock
algorithm for paging, optimized pmap code, multi-page cluster pageins,
bypassing the buffer cache for paging in, and lots and lots of bug fixes.
We actually have people that truely understand the VM system, and our
if_ed driver, written by our team member, David Greenman, is *very*
reliable and attains THE ethernet bandwidth. The sound driver that we
support is very good (as I have heard.) Our interrupt latency is very
short and we can sustain very high interrupt rates. We are dedicated
to product quality code and do have a lot of future goals. Our software
is open and currently keep our latest development sources available for
everyone to read. If you have any questions, email me at
dyson@implode.root.com (that is where I usually use email.) I realize
that this does not answer your question about the BSD consortium, but
sometimes diversity can lead to more creativity due to competition. The
new release will be out in a couple of weeks, but current sources look
good. Let me know if you are interested...

John
