Ok, here's the general picture.

The nice [and seriously twisted] folks at ID have indeed done, or are
actively doing, a Linux port of DOOM. Their primary development
platform is NeXT based, so they're no strangers to UNIX or doing fast
graphics without necessarily beating directly on the metal. They
don't really expect to make any real money on the Linux port, and even
less on a *BSD port, so they're apparently doing it mostly for the fun
of it.

A port to FreeBSD is mostly just a question of locating some suitable
hardware, something that they've asked for a temporary loan of if
someone is amenable. The software side of it should be pretty
straight-forward since FreeBSD uses the Linux sound driver (with which
they've presumably already come to terms with) and is close enough to
the NeXTStations in terms of "BSDishness" that I don't see a lot of
problems on the UNIX porting front.

I've taken steps to provide them with the software (sent them a CD)
and we're basically just waiting to see how they make out in getting
some sort of hardware together. If you have a FreeBSD system you'd be
willing to part with for a short time, in return for everlasting fame
and glory (well, your name would be mentioned in the credits), then
please drop me some email and I'll be happy to put you in touch!

By necessity, you probably want to live somewhere reasonably close to
Texas, in the U.S., unless you're seriously rich and philanthropic (or
just really really really want to see your name in the credits :-).

Thanks!
