First of all, can you dialout using the line w/out any problems?

That sounds like something else is on the line doing it's thing (getty).

At that point getty stuck up the login screen and is waiting for something
to happen.

Could be a flow control problem, or a simple setup problem.  A unix
boot would be a good thing to have in these cases.
