The only problem with this suggestion is that if I use the SYSCONS driver,
then I don't get ANY keyboard response in X. Other than that, SYSCONS
works just fine. I tried someones suggestion of putting an
'stty -f /dev/vga sane' after the 'kdb_mode -a' in startx. This did not
work, but using /dev/console instead of /dev/vga worked (go figure). This
was using the PCCONS driver.

The bottom line is, if I use the SYSCONS driver, my keyboard is dead
after ENTERING X. If I use the PCCONS driver, my keyboard is dead
after EXITING X. Perhaps if someone would kindly post the correct
setup for SYSCONS in /etc/ttys, it would help. I took a guess and
commented out the /dev/console getty entry after adding all the ttyv*
entries. This seems to work, as far as VT's are concerned.
