A 525 MB data cartridge written on FreeBSD 1.0.2 (the hardware is
a Archive Viper 525 MB SCSI tape drive connected to an Adaptec 1542CF)
cannot be read unter other OSs like ESIX 4.0.4.1 on exactly the same
machine !!
DOS with ASPI has problems, too.
The other way around is of no problem.
QIC-120 works correctly.

Another tape problem:
As you might know QIC-24 (60 MB) tape cartridges can only be read on a 500 MB
QIC streamer, you cannot write DC600A cartridges in the 60 MB format.
But what you usually can is erase the DC600A and then writing data
in the QIC-120 format and get 120 MB.
Now it comes: the mt command refuses to erase DC600A (60 MB) cartridges.
I had to boot MSDOG and use the ASPI tool crctrl to do it. :-(
