I am trying to install FreeBSD. It works fine until I try to extract the
binary or source distributions then it fails randomly with errors such
as /tmp/tar skipping to next file header. I say randomly because if I
start it again it fails at different files each time. I started by
doing the extract on nfs mounted directories and then I tried copying
the files to the local drive but it also fails there. The files are
actually ok because I can gunzip and untar them on a sun. In fact,
I've been able to install the binary distribution that way.

There is another (probably related problem) which is when I copy the
source distribution from the Sun to the FreeBSD machine I get complaints
that "protocol is not supported".

Someone else reported these problems but I never saw a reply.

Has anyone else seen this and is there a fix?

Thanks...
