just for jollies i'm posting using vi... i have no idea what this
will look like when i actually post it..

anyway, i don't think you need to have the terminal slashes. well
more to the point i think that's what's messing it up. it makes
ypserv think all the entries in the database are on the same line,
which they aren't or shouldn't be.

gosh, vi is really waful. awful, that is. i don't even want to try
to edit this - that - dammit! line..  and to think people used
editors like this exclusively once upon a miserable time.
