You haven't given any details, so this is a hard question to answer.  What
kind of machine?  What kind of ports?  Etc.

Do you have a 16550 card?  I've tested the sio driver on a 386sx/16 with two
16550 ports and I've been able to run the ports "pretty well" at speeds of
up to 56Kbps bidirectionally at the same time (ie, connected to each other
and running garbage back and forth at the same time)  I average at least
5000cps input on each port when doing this and it has run overnight.

This is quite impressive, IMHO.

It also works with 16450s but not as well, of course.  It works even better
on faster machines.  ;-)
