I have the same problems and the same setup, only I am running NetBSD 0.9.
I was told to try the svgalib package that comes the Slackware and try runx.
But I could not get it to compile. Someone else told me that this exact problem was discussed on the net about a month back. Does anyone remember the solution(s)?
