I don't have a full solution but found that lpd does not send <CR>.  By 
sending the sequence to the deskjet to turn <LF> into <CR><LF>, I was able
to print on BSDi (similar to FreeBSD), although it seemed slow compared to
DOS or Windows.  <esc>&k2G does it.  This isn't a high priority for me, so I
haven't gotten farther than this.  lpr a file with this sequence, then the 
printer will print.  You may want to add pw#80 to the printcap to say that it 
is 80 characters wide..
